I have no idea where this came from, but I found a documentary called A Clockwork Shining: Kubrick’s Odyssey Part 3 recently. All I saw was that it was another conspiracy theory surrounding The Shining.

There are probably many videos doing the same thing. I have seen Apartment 237. In that documentary, it explains how The Shining is an apology from Kubrick for filming the fake moon landings. Time for a quick joke:

Stanley Kubrick did in fact film the fake moon landings, but was such a stickler for details, he demanded it was filmed on location.

This new documentary goes even further down the rabbit hole. This one is about how Kubrick’s The Shining was actually about the exposure of MKUltra.

MKUltra

At first, this sounds like a cool computer game from the 1980s. It is not, but it is a not-so-secret human experimental program that was conducted by the CIA.

From the 1960s to the 1980s (and still probably today), the CIA was using mind control drugs.

Things like LSD and other psychoactive drugs were used to weaken enemies into confession. It was also believed that exposing people to trauma could unlock ‘powers’, aka, Deadpool.

Deadpool is a fantasy movie, but people in the CIA believed that it could be true. People could have powers that could be unlocked.

It made me think of Men Who Stare at Goats, which I need to see again.

In this new documentary, it’s claimed that Kubrick knew all about MKUltra and was making a movie about mind control. It says there aren’t any ‘ghosts’ at the Overlook, it was all done with drugs and suggestions.

Closing the Overlook over the winter gave the perfect conditions for mind control experiments. At the start of the movie, Ullman tells the story of another caretaker who went nuts and killed his family.

Was that supposed to happen in a controlled environment, and the previous caretaker was a subject of MKUltra and it worked!

Drugs Are Bad, Mmmm K

Interestingly, in the movie, it’s suggested that nothing supernatural happens in the Overlook. The only exception is when Danny has a ball rolled towards him. The rest of it is explained by drugs. Hear me out.

The Overlook is a big place with plenty of places for people to hide. The first time Jack sees a ‘ghost’ is when he meets Lloyd the bartender.

Was Lloyd a product of Jack’s imagination or was he an actor?

Lloyd gives Jack a drink and it’s from that moment that Jack starts to see other ‘ghosts’. Was the drink laced with LSD or some other mind-altering drug? If so, it would explain why room 237 looked so psychedelic, because Jack was tripping.

Danny’s hallucinations can be explained as well. It’s known that Jack had hurt Danny in the past. This was said to have triggered Danny’s shining, which is what the CIA were trying to trigger.

Alternate Ending

I would say that The Shining is one of my favourite movies of all time. I never knew that an alternate ending was shot, screened in a few select cinemas, then destroyed forever.

Following this rabbit hole of MKUltra, it was said that Kubrick filmed an ending which carried this explanation. In a hospital, Ullman goes to see Danny and Wendy. He explains that nothing out of the ordinary was found at the hotel and they must have imagined it.

It suggested that Ullman knew about everything that was going on with the MKUltra experiments and, again, this one worked and Jack performed perfectly. Him suggesting that Danny and Wendy stay at his place is to keep an eye on them.

The only thing that exists now is a couple of stills and a copy of the script that was written by Kubrick. As I said, Kubrick got his editor to take a couple of copies of the ending, splice it into a couple of random cinemas, then have them destroyed.

In fact, Kubrick had all of the extra footage from the Shining destroyed, outtakes, extra footage, everything.

There’s probably a handful of people that have seen this original cut.

Can Open, Worms Everywhere

Obviously, this is a conspiracy theory. The Shining is one of those movies that you could read anything into it, which enough watches you could probably calculate the date of the end of the world or the chemical formula for rice pudding.

It was interesting to see in this documentary that the original script that Kubrick submitted to Warner was not the final movie. There are behind-the-scenes footage with Nickson not bothered with a script, because Kubrick kept changing it.

If all this is to be believed, it would mean Kubrick had a plan all along and changed everything as he went.

In the rest of the documentary, it talks about Kubrick’s links with the government and army.

How a lot of famous people had military links, Jim Morrison for example, who’s father was a high ranking officer in the Navy. Was Jim’s fame, drug addiction and eventual death all part of a secret plan?

There is an interview with a lady whose father was in the CIA and basically experimented on her to try and trigger her to bring out her powers. It was pretty rough hearing about the life she’s had, sexually abused, tortured and then sold to the government to carry on the experiment.

She is a product of MKUltra.

Conspiracy Theory

As I say, this is all a conspiracy theory. I mean, do I believe there are government agencies out there, controlling weird experiments? Yes, I do. The details about MKUltra were released many years ago, people read it, were shocked and then everything went back to normal.

I can’t say that The Shining is all about this kind of thing, but I believe that Kubrick had a hidden agenda with his movies. The Shining isn’t just a movie about ghosts, based on a Stephen King novel. It’s a lot deeper and I want to watch it again now. Here are some stills from that alternate ending.
