Highly acclaimed Netflix animated series “Arcane,” based on the “League of Legends” gaming franchise, wrapped its run last month after two seasons.
At the time it was indicated that while “Arcane” may be done, that was not the end for “League of Legends” animated adaptations with series co-creator Christian Linke indicating that multiple spin-off shows were in active development.
In an exclusive interview with The Direct, Linke offered an update on the status of those spin-offs, saying they were being “pretty aggressively” developed:
“We definitely have a number of products that kind of are born out of ‘Arcane.’ We are in the process where we’re just developing. Nothing is in full production yet, but we’re pretty aggressively developing a few of them in particular that we’re just excited about.”
The Emmy-winner also confirmed that only some will be continuations of the “Arcane” storyline – some of the others are not:
“We want to tell more stories… Some of the ones that we are developing right now are completely new characters from our IP, and others are a continuation of ‘Arcane.”
Part of the issue with “Arcane” was expense – the two seasons cost $250 million to produce – making it the most expensive animated series of all time. Nonetheless it scored a lot of acclaim as one of the best game-to-screen adaptations ever made, even with the consensus for the second season not as universally gushing as the first.
