The new DC Universe’s first project, the animated series “Creature Commandos,” is about to hit Max in a few hours and is riding a wave of good reviews in the process.
Ahead of that, James Gunn has been out there promoting the show – all while co-running DC Studios and doing post-production on both “Superman” and “Peacemaker” Season 2.
The latter in particular has drawn questions from fans about just how much from the first season, and James Gunn’s own “The Suicide Squad” film, will factor into the new DCU.
Gunn has discussed this before, indicating that whatever’s said in the new episodes becomes canon – including past season or film events. Now, speaking with THR, he elaborates on that further:
“Yeah, they [Peacemaker S1 & The Suicide Squad] are light canon. Peacemaker is pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group [the former DCEU’s Justice League] at the end. (Laughs.) They don’t exist yet. But the rule is: If we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that’s the way we’re dealing with it.”
Gunn has previously indicated that animated works in this franchise are as essential as live-action ones, and characters will be able to hop between mediums. Does that mean we’ll be about to see someone like G.I. Robot in live-action someday?
“We’ve talked about all of these characters in live-action and how we would do them, if we did them, in live-action. I don’t want to give away any secrets, but we use some technology in Superman that’s completely new in regards to this kind of stuff. So we would know exactly how to do G.I. Robot.”
One thing that will remain very consistent between the live-action and animation works is the world they inhabit:
“Everything is very consistent in terms of the politics of the world and where the world is at and what’s going on; who are the metahumans in power, who are the metahumans not in power; who are the power brokers, who are not the power brokers. So we see a glimpse of it here, but we see more of it in Superman and Peacemaker.”
Gunn says he’s currently showing his new “Superman” film to select test audiences for the first time, calling it an “enormous bear of a movie” and “completely different from this show in every way”. He also adds that the second season of “Peacemaker” is “going to take people by surprise. We take a very different route than the first season”.
“Creature Commandos” launches December 5th at 3am US-ET on Max. “Superman” opens in cinema in July next year and “Peacemaker” Season 2 is tipped to launch in August 2025.
