It is easy to forget, as Disney struggles to reverse about a decade of terrible decisions, that the studio is probably responsible for more real classics than any other. Even in the more modern era, its animation department still produced movies that were capable of delighting audiences. One of those from that era was Lilo & Stitch.

Described as “Dumbo for a new generation”, Lilo & Stitch was praised by critics for its story, humor, charm, and originality. It was promoted as a non-traditional Disney tale and made over $273 million worldwide, in the process being nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards.

When Disney ordered a live-action adaption of the well-regarded animated feature, they originally planned to release it via Disney+. They saw enough quality in the production to change plans and now it will be released in theaters.

The teaser, which does not reveal much, will be attached to copies of the expected box office juggernaut that is Moana 2 this week.

Dean Fleischer Camp directs, and once again it will tell the story of an intergalactic fugitive who helps an orphaned Hawaiian girl and her family heal.

Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis star. Maia Kealo plays Lilo. Wait a minute – Tia Carrere! Now getting flashbacks to Wayne’s World and True Lies and a happier time in our youths.

The project was delayed due to the pandemic and the strikes, but Lilo & Stitch will finally be released on May 23rd, 2025.
