If there was one common complaint about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even during its height in the 2010s, it’s the overall similar tone of the films.
The movies all looked fairly similar and sounded fairly similar. They had potentially world ending scenarios with stakes and serious moments broken up by quips and character riffing.
Some got a little more serious, some a little more jokey, some lowered the stakes a little, but most of those variations were window dressing changes. At the core there was a Marvel formula which they all stuck to – and for a good decade or so it worked, so why not.
Participating in that with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise was James Gunn who is now running rival DC Studios. In a recent interview with MovieZine (via CBM), he says the plan is not to copy the competition. Rather, he will embrace DC’s ability to shake up its tone with each entry – including his own upcoming “Superman” film:
“Everything’s going to be totally different. One of the things I love about DC Comics is that they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways.
They’ve told stories that were more family-orientated, stories that were more adult-orientated, dark stories, light stories. I think for us, we just want to tell a bunch of different stories. A lot of those different stories are going to be in the DCU.
We have something that’s relatively serious like Superman and then something that’s relatively comedic like Peacemaker all in the same universe. Something very adult like Peacemaker [and] something pretty family-friendly like Superman.
I think that to be able to tell different kinds of stories is kind of what makes things fun. One of the things I’ve gotten a little sick of is all these stories being relatively the same. I’m trying to step outside of that. We at DC are trying to step outside of that.”
Though there’s been plenty of photos from the set of filming taking place, to date there’s really only been some vague still photos and one bit of art from Gunn’s “Superman” film.
Many are eagerly awaiting the film’s first trailer with various conflicting reports about when it will arrive – the most recent suggesting it’ll hit Monday December 9th. The movie itself opens July 11th 2025.
