The two sides of Batman could be on full display soon. With Matt Reeve’s ultra-gritty take giving birth to the critical smash The Penguin, we have all wondered what might happen to the more fantastical villains in his rogues gallery. One of them, Clayface, might be with us sooner than we thought.

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, Hush) pitched a Clayface movie to DC Bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. It was referred to as a horror thriller with a touch of tragedy.

Internet scooper DanielRPK now reports that the project is moving forward. The script is done and shooting is being planned for the spring.

The original Clayface, Basil Karlo, appeared in Detective Comics #40 (June 1940) as a B-list actor who began a life of crime using the identity of a villain he had portrayed in a horror film. The character only appeared twice in the Golden Age.

In the late 1950s, Batman began facing a series of more science fiction-inspired foes. One of these was Matthew Hagen, a treasure hunter given vast shapeshifting powers and resiliency by exposure to a pool of radioactive protoplasm, who became the second Clayface.  Over the years there have been several more.

This character would have to fit in with the Brave And The Bold version of Batman planned for the DCU, rather than the Matt Reeves’ Elseworlds version. Alan Tudyk voiced the character in the Harley Quinn animated series and also voices a different version of him in Creature Commandos, which is firmly part of the new DCU.

Ron Perlman played Clayface in the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series.
