Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro is supposed to offer better quality graphics at a higher price point, but it turns out there’s some exceptions to the rule.
The recent “Silent Hill 2” remake and last year’s “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” are both proving to perform visibly worse on the Pro than on the base PS5.
The Reddit page for the “Silent Hill 2” remake has been flooded with complaints for the fault. Despite the title being labelled as ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’, is hasn’t been updated since prior to the console’s release.
Both the ‘Quality’ and ‘Performance’ mode not only show no sign of improvement, but the latter is plagued by a shimmering effect with many surfaces riddled with noise.
It’s generally thought a patch for the title hasn’t arrived yet, but developers Bloober Team, publisher Konami and Sony have all been radio silent about the problem ever since it emerged.
Meanwhile Digital Foundry published a video claiming the PS5 Pro version of “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” has some “severe image quality problems” with that same shimmering effect taking place. The analyst in the video says on Pro the game’s perfomance mode “looks dramatically worse than the old [base PS5] Performance mode here”.
The issue is believed to be the result of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology used by the PS5 Pro – tech that is working incorrectly with these titles.
