Filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu (“Nanny”) has reportedly begun development on “The Fly,” a new feature film based on David Cronenberg’s iconic 1986 body horror feature.
Jusu will pen and direct the film for 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment, with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping producing.
Though story details are under wraps, what is clear is that this is NOT a reboot, rather it’s a new film set within the same universe as Cronenberg’s original which starred Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.
In that film, Goldblum played scientist Seth Brundle whose experiments with teleportation take a terrifying turn when his DNA is accidentally fused with a fly’s. He begins transforming both physically and psychologically into a giant fly creature.
Chris Walas handled the Oscar-winning groundbreaking practical effects for the film which grossed over $60 million globally on a modest budget. Walas took the helm of the widely panned and even gorier sequel in 1989 which starred Eric Stoltz.
Jusu has a horror project about day-walking Black vampires in the works at Universal Pictures and Monkeypaw Entertainment, and is set to helm a new “Night of the Living Dead” sequel at MGM.
