What was initially looking set to be a sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s early 1990s action classic “Cliffhanger” is now going to be something different entirely – a full reboot.
Stallone has reportedly exited the project which is currently in production in Austria and has undergone a major creative overhaul. Also out is director Ric Roman Waugh (“Greenland”).
Instead, actor Lily James (“The Iron Claw”,” “Pam & Tommy”) and Bond franchise veteran Pierce Brosnan will star in the project with James in the lead role.
In addition, the film will now be directed by “The Shallows” and “Non-Stop” helmer Jaume Collet-Serra. Rocket Science, Thank You Pictures and Supernix remain the backers of the project.
The new script will be based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour with the new version said to be a “father-daughter take on ‘Die Hard’”. Brosnan will play seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, who operates a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with daughter Sydney.
During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. Ray’s other daughter Naomi (James), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival.
Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba and Bruno Gouery will co-star.
