Fans of Karen Gillan in short-shorts can rejoice. A third “modern” Jumanji movie is confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter says Sony Pictures has set a December 11th, 2026 release, including on IMAX.
Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black will all return. It is expected that other key co-stars such as Nick Jonas and Rhys Darby will also be back, alongside series director Jake Kasdan,
The series was based on a 1981 adventure book by Chris Van Allsburg, before being adapted into the well-loved 1995 version starring Robin Williams. A reboot – Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – updated the story to set it within a video game. It was a smash hit with a near $1 billion haul.
This led to an inevitable sequel (Jumanji: The Next Level) in 2019 that also passed $800 million. On budgets of around $100 million, these movies are great business. Scheduling delayed it so far, but producer Johnson has always been keen to finish off the trilogy. Sony has been pushing for a while.
The team behind the movies confirmed that they take place in the same universe as the 1995 original, as does Zathura: A Space Adventure.
Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, and Danny Glover joined the franchise for the sequel. That was shot at the Blackhall Studios near Atlanta, New Mexico, Calgary, Fortress Mountain Resort, Algodones Dunes in California, and Hawaii.
Johnson made a reported $23.5 million for that movie.
