CBS has announced that its Kathy Bates-led unexpectedly twisted reconception of “Matlock” has been renewed for a second season, the order coming after just two episodes have aired.
The series debuted with a special Sunday sneak preview that delivered 7.7 million total viewers, making it CBS’ most-watched series launch not in the post-Super Bowl slot since 2019.
After a long break, the series’ first regularly scheduled Thursday episode retained 6.4 million viewers and the same 0.4 demo rating of the pilot.
The series premiere made headlines for the twist of its last few minutes in which the entire premise and tone of the series is turned on its head.
CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach says in a statement:
“This reconceived Matlock was devised by Jennie Snyder Urman with a brilliant surprise plot twist, and we knew we had something very special the moment we saw the first episode brought to life by the incredibly talented Kathy Bates. The audience reception and critical acclaim for it has been overwhelming. We can’t wait to get started on a second season.”
