By Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” reportedly won’t be in the running for a Best Original Score Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.
The highly acclaimed film’s musical score by composer Hans Zimmer is reportedly not eligible for this year’s Oscars due to surpassing the Academy’s limit on pre-existing music.
Under the rule, which applies to sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.
Zimmer’s composition for “Dune: Part Two” incorporates substantial elements from his work on 2021’s “Dune,” thus it falls outside of the criteria for eligibility and can’t be nominated.
His work on the film remains in contention at all the other awards bodies like the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, etc. and he also remains eligible to be nominated for Steve McQueen’s WW2 drama “Blitz”.
The film joins a long list of famous movies whose scores are deemed ineligible for Oscar consideration including “Drive,” “Black Swan,” “There Will Be Blood” and “Arrival”.
