Back in June came a report that there was a dispute going on between “Parasite” and “The Host” filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and Warner Bros. Pictures over the final cut of his new sci-fi thriller “Mickey 17”.

Warner Bros. Pictures was originally planning to release the film in March this year but ended up pushing it back to January 2025. Part of it was the studio wanting to release a more ‘accessible’ version of the $150 million-budget film that Bong disapproved of.

In a new interview with Empire, Bong confirms he has final cut on the film which the studio has respected. The result is what we’re getting he’s very happy with:

“With ‘Okja’ and now ‘Mickey 17,’ I was given the final cut as part of my deal. The studio respected my final cut rights. Of course, during the editing process there are many opinions and many discussions that happen. But this film is my cut, and I’m very happy about it. It was a long process, but it was always smooth and respectful.”

The film’s star Robert Pattinson says what we’re getting is Bong’s vision and “it’s really cool that a studio has done this film… something that does feel incredibly unusual.” Pattinson also spoke about his accent, saying his Mickey 17 voice is inspired by cult classic 1990s cartoon “Ren & Stimpy” while his Mickey 18 voice is “a little bit more like Ren.”

The film’s story follows Mickey, a disposable employee sent to colonise an ice world, and soon realises that his body can regenerate after death but with his memories still preserved. Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie co-star in the film based on Edward Ashton’s novel.

“Mickey 17” is slated to open on January 31st 2025.
