By Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk unveiled prototypes for the self-driving cybercab and robovan coming from his company, along with having Tesla robots named ‘Optimus’ interacting with the crowd.
Dubbing it the “biggest product ever of any kind,” Musk promised these autonomous assistants: “can be a teacher, babysit your kids, it can walk your dog, mow your lawn, get the groceries, just be your friend, serve drinks, whatever you can think of, it will do.”
The designs on hand immediately drew plenty of comparison to 2004’s Alex Proyas-directed film “I, Robot” – so much so that Australian-Egyptian filmmaker has responded on the Musk-owned social media platform X, saying: “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?”
The posting included side-by-side images of the “I, Robot” autonomous police force to the Tesla Optimus bots along with two modes of transport in the film comparable to the new vehicles.
Inspired by Isaac Asimov’s short story collection of the same name, the film is set in the future world of Chicago in 2035. A detective (Will Smith) tries to unravel a confusing murder that may or may not have been caused by a member of the autonomous police force named Sonny (played by Alan Tudyk).
The film ended up earning $353 million from a $120 million budget. Proyas, who is looking very different these days after losing 50kgs/110lbs in 18 months, is currently in production for another sci-fi film – “R.U.R.”.
