Filmmaker Sam Hargrave, who directed the two Chris Hemsworth-led “Extraction” films, is attached to direct a film adaptation of the classic SEGA hack-and-slash video game franchise “Shinobi” at Universal Pictures.
The game, which debuted in 1987 in arcades follows modern-day ninja Joe Musashi who must stop the Zeed terrorist organization from kidnapping young students of his ninja clan.
The games were noted for their high level of difficulty along with their high quality graphics, gameplay and music. A new instalment is currently in development.
Nearly five million copies have been sold over the years and in all around twelve games from 1987-2011 which were made for assorted systems from as old as the Commodore 64 all the way through to the PS2 and Nintendo 3DS.
Hargrave was a stuntman who transitioned into becoming an in-demand director and has been praised for his conveyance of action.
Universal is one of the few to have found success adapting games for the big screen following last year’s double success with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Five Nights at Freddy‘s” films.
SEGA itself has had great success translating the “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise to the big screen with a third installment in that franchise due in December.
Ken Kobayashi will pen the script with Marc Platt and Adam Siegel producing.
