Dreamworks Animation unleashed “The Wild Robot” in cinemas the other week to not just a strong box-office start, but some of the best reviews of any studio animated film to date.

With nearly 170 reviews counted, it sits at an astonishing 98% (8.4/10) with critics and a similarly near perfect 98% (4.8/5) with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and seems likely to be a serious contender for the Best Animated Feature Oscar.

The film, about a robot named Roz taking care of an orphaned baby goose, is based on a book series and so the possibility is there for a potential sequel. With its success, that almost seems a guarantee at this point.

Speaking with NBC about the possibility, director Chris Sanders says he would love nothing more than to return to this world:

“I would very much like to. I think the entire crew really, really involved themselves in this film in a way that I’ve never seen before, myself included. This was a labor of love on the part of everybody at the studio, and yes, I think I’d love to go and stay here for a while.”

The film’s star Lupita Nyong’o confirmed that she would also be very on board to return:

“Oh, my goodness, yes. I mean, I love Roz. I love this project. It’s a good thing Peter Brown wrote three books! I would revisit her in a heartbeat.”

Nothing has been confirmed by Dreamworks Animation as of yet regarding a follow-up film.
