By The first-day figures are in and Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” is delivering numbers for the DC Comics adaptation that look very akin to last Fall’s big tentpole release from DC’s main rival.
The “Joker” sequel pulled in $7 million in Thursday night previews and a further $13 million on Friday, with estimates now for the film’s debut to be around $45-50 million reports Deadline.
This has drawn parallels to “The Marvels” which had $6.6 million in previews and a further $15 million Friday haul before landing an opening weekend of $46.1 million.
The concern is that the bad word of mouth on the $190 million-budgeted “Joker” sequel will mean its frontloaded with the numbers to go into freefall as early as tomorrow. The film’s PostTrak exit poll survey has seen audiences giving the film a rare 1/2 star rating and only 24% saying they would recommend the film to their friends.
The figures come as Puck News is reporting that despite the risky musical meets courtroom elements of the film, Warners declined to test screen the film before it was locked.
International may not save the film either as the outlet indicates Warners movies have had an unexpected slump this year in foreign markets with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Twisters” vastly underperforming overseas compared to domestic, and “Furiosa” did only half the numbers of “Fury Road”.
The “Joker” sequel will come out on top domestically this weekend though with “The Wild Robot” headed for a second weekend of $19.5 million (down 46%), “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in third with $11.4 million (down 30%), “Transformers One” in fourth with $5.5 million (down 40%), and “Speak No Evil” in fifth with $3 million (down 30%). Lionsgate’s long-delayed “Wonder” sequel “White Bird” is dead on arrival with an opening weekend of around $1.5-2 million.
