One face that will quickly become familiar to those exploring Gunn & Safran’s new DC Universe on screen is none other than “The Purge” and “Kingdom” actor Frank Grillo.

The action star will first appear as team leader Rick Flag, Sr. in the animated series “Creature Commandos” premiering this Fall on Max. He’s also confirmed to be making an appearance in James Gunn’s “Superman” film next Summer as the character in live-action form.

After that, he’ll play a key part in the second season of “Peacemaker” on Max where he’ll butt heads with John Cena’s titular character who previously killed Rick’s son Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in “The Suicide Squad”. In other words, he’ll be a key link in this early stage of the new DC Universe.

Speaking with EW about the character, Gunn confirms his appearance in all three projects and how the character is fully fleshed out:

“He is a really cool character that Frank has been molding. The character’s also in Superman, and he’s an incredibly important part in Peacemaker. He is one of the primary characters in Peacemaker season 2. So we get to see this character from different angles, and he is not simple.

This isn’t just a good guy, not at all. We see all different sides of his character. He is morally a complex human being. Grillo is somebody who I’ve known for a little while, and I’ve wanted to work with him for a long time. He was one of the first people that I talked to when I took over the studio, like ‘we’re going to find something cool for you,’ and now he is everywhere.”

Grillo will essentially serve as the ‘proof of concept’ for Gunn and Safran’s previously announced rule that characters will consistently be played by the same actor across both animated and live-action projects, be it film or television (or games).

“Creature Commandos” will gt the ball rolling when it premieres December 5th on Max. Both “Superman” and “Peacemaker” S2 are due in 2025.
