Like various actors who have played Superman, actor David Corenswet had to bulk up for the role and in doing so it required quite a bit of weight gain.
Appearing on the Manly Things (Sort Of) podcast (via Variety), the 6’4 actor revealed he put on nearly 40 pounds – jumping from around 200 lbs/91 kg to 238 lbs/108 kg at his peak while training:
“I wasn’t 238 (pounds) when we started shooting. I was 238 at my max. I didn’t fit into any of my pants.”
In fact, it wasn’t until the table read for the film, when he had to don a XX-Large sweatshirt, that he realised how big he’d gotten:
“That was at the peak of my bulk, and then I slowly lost weight before we started shooting. I started shooting at about 228, 230… I know I wanted this to be my excuse to see what it felt like to gain essentially as much weight as I could.”
He adds that it was difficult to maintain his peak weight throughout the production process and he ‘didn’t feel great’ as his body wasn’t used to all of the extra weight he had gained.
Despite his physical achievements, the film has undergone some criticism after set photos from the film showed him in a Superman suit much less form-fitting than versions past.
This has led to speculation as to how it’ll look on film and whether there’ll be digital enhancements. The James Gunn-directed “Superman” is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 11th 2025.
