Tim Burton’s legacy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is out-performing expectations to top the weekend box office. As of yesterday night, it was sitting at $110 million and comfortably top of the rankings for the weekend.

The studio had been estimating around $90 million.  It made another $35 million overseas, taking its total over $145 million globally, with numbers still coming in.

This means it has already taken in more at the box office than its $100 million budget, and is heading towards a box office take that could be double that of the entire takings of the first movie ($75 million unadjusted for inflation).

This also makes it the second-best opening ever in September, just behind IT.

The rest of the box office was subdued, with content that has been out a while and is days away in many cases from a PVOD debut.

Deadpool & Wolverine was second with a healthy $7.2 million. Reagan took third, with another $5 million taking it to $18 million. Alien: Romulus passed $300 million worldwide with another $3.9 million.

Outside of this, there were no notable runners and riders further down the list.

A post-summer season lull will now take hold for a couple of weeks.
