Actor Russell Crowe’s career has been defined by many roles, but none more than his Oscar-winning performance in Ridley Scott’s iconic film “Gladiator” in 2000.
Nearly a quarter century later, that film is getting a sequel, one which follows Lucius – the son of Connie Nelson’s Lucilla who was a boy in the original who befriended Crowe’s General Maximus Decimus Meridius.
Paul Mescal takes on the grown-man version of the Lucius role in Scott’s sequel, and some fans hoped that, with de-aging technology, we might see Crowe’s dead Maximus character in the film at some point – be it a flashback or dream sequence.
That’s not happening. Crowe himself has previously discussed how he roughly knows what Scott is doing and so perfectly understands why he’s not involved.
Speaking with Empire, Scott gave an even more straightforward response, expressing gratitude for working with Crowe and then a typical Scott-style common sense statement:
“I think he’s still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope we do. As long as he doesn’t start bitching about how he wasn’t consulted. Why would I? He’s dead!”
The sequel follows Lucius (Mescal), who has been sent far away by his mother. General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) conducts a manhunt to locate Lucius, the rightful heir to the throne, and he’s brought to the legendary Gladiator pits to fight.
“Gladiator 2” also stars Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Peter Mensah, Rory McCann, Matt Lucas, Tim McInnery, May Calamawy and Derek Jacobi. It opens in cinemas November 15th.
