Winona Ryder says that while she loves her young co-stars in recent series and films, she’s accutely aware of the younger generation’s diminished love of film.
Speaking with The Los Angeles Times to promote “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” she says love and appreciation of cinema is something the youngsters she works with lack:
“I don’t mean to sound so hopeless. There are a few that are just not interested in movies. Like, the first thing they say is, ‘How long is it?’.”
Two that are clear of that assessment are Jenna Ortega and Finn Wolfhard. Wolfhard is said to be “obsessed with Elliott Gould,” while Ortega brought up Mikhail Kalatozov’s 1964 film “I Am Cuba” in passing during a scene set in a crypt.
Ryder says she almost wept to hear Ortega reference specific shots from that famed film. The actress goes on to explain that film is a “very sacred thing” to her and she worries about its future:
“I’m not a religious person. I’m not anti-religion, but I feel like the closest is film, and it’s – to me – a very sacred thing. I feel so protective, but I’m not in any place to be in control. It’s not up to me.”
Ryder can next be seen in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” which hits theaters on September 6th.
