Ketchup Entertainment has yet to officially announce a U.S. release date for the upcoming “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” film – but a new leak has indicated when the film will begin its international rollout.
PVR INOX Pictures, the largest independent distributor of foreign language films in India, is reportedly releasing the film on September 13th in the country according to their X feed.
Meanwhile, CGV Cinemas in Vietnam says it’s coming even sooner over there – specifically this upcoming Friday August 30th going by the labelling on trailers. This would suggest a U.S. release is fairly imminent either way.
During a recent interview with Total Film, director Brian Taylor spoke about how the film will differ from both the prior big-budget Guillermo del Toro films and the poorly received Neil Marshall-helmed reboot:
“As cool as those other movies were, even Mignola will tell you it’s not quite his character. I don’t think in terms of ‘it’s a reboot’ or trying to start a new franchise – this isn’t content, it’s a movie that needs to stand on its own.
Nobody wants to see a cheap knock-off of a Guillermo del Toro $100-million movie. This is going back to the young Hellboy where he was really more of the plumber who’s going to fix your monster problem.
This wandering, sarcastic, soulful, smoking guy who stumbles on supernatural hauntings and occurrences and helps out as best he can. If Mike [Mignola] feels like for the first time he sees his guy on screen, then I feel like we’ve succeeded.”
The film sees Hellboy (Jack Kesy) and a rookie BPRD agent (Adeline Rudolph) stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches and led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past – the Crooked Man.
Said man is Jeremiah Witkins, an 18th-century miser and war profiteer hanged for his crimes yet returned from Hell as the region’s resident Devil. Jefferson White, Joseph Marcell, Hannah Margetson and Martin Bassindale co-star in the film with a script co-written by Mignola himself.
