The cat is long out of the bag in regards to Channing Tatum finally getting to play Gambit in Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
The actor was long attached to a standalone “Gambit” film that never managed to get off the ground at 20th Century Fox prior to it being scuttled after Fox was acquired by Disney.
The multiverse spanning film gave Tatum the chance to play it, and did so with a comic-accurate costume and Cajun accent. That accent, however, was so thick as to make him unintelligible to a bunch of the audience at times.
Turns out it was deliberate according to Tatum himself in an lie detector interview for Vanity Fair this week to promote Zoe Kravitz’s new film “Blink Twice”. Asked about a line in “Deadpool & Wolverine in which Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool compares Gambit’s accent to the minions and whether it was a ‘fair’ criticism, he says: “‘Fair’ is an interesting word in that question. No, I don’t think that’s fair.”
That follows on from a quote he gave Access Hollywood the other week that’s circling again, in which he said:
“The Cajun dialect is a very particular one. I grew up in Mississippi and my dad is from New Orleans. So it’s one of those things that I grew up around it, but I’ve never done it.
There are certain little isms that are very Cajun-y, but we actually intended it to be somewhat unintelligible. That was sort of the joke.
[Ryan would] come up to be and say, ‘I don’t want to know anything that you’re saying on this [take], so I just dialled it all the way up. And then other ones he’s like, ‘All right, I’ve got to understand what you’re saying now.’”
Tatum also says sadly that he wasn’t able to take the Gambit costume home with him. He tells VF: “I was too scared to ask and usually, I steal the very last outfit that I’m in in every movie. I was too scared to do it on this one.”
