By An activation event for HBO’s new “The Batman” spin-off series “The Penguin” was evacuated on Friday evening after a fire broke out in the building during the press preview.
According to Variety, members of the media and multiple actors from the series were escorted outside by officials. A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department rep indicated firefighters responded to a call just before 7:30 pm.
The fire reportedly began in a Brazilian steakhouse that was also in the building and, though not large, took a while to contain. Authorities remain on site to ventilate the building.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
The multi-level installation was being held at Bloom Nightclub which had been altered to portray Gotham City’s infamous ‘Iceberg Lounge’ – a criminal dive club glimpsed in the 2022 “The Batman” film.
The activation was said to be the most elaborate in-person promotional push yet for the DC Comics series and featured special effects, haptic technology, interactivity and exclusive content.
The incident took place the night before a major panel in Hall H tomorrow to promote the series ahead of its release in September. Colin Farrell will reprise his role as the villainous gangster Oswald Cobblepot in the series.
