Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has set a major new event film at the studio which will be released on December 18th 2026.
That film, expected to be the helmer’s immediate next, is being described as an ‘event’ picture and will also be released in IMAX.
The project takes the date already set aside by the studio for an “untitled WB family event film,” Villeneuve’s movie likely taking over from whatever was slated there.
Further details remain under wraps at this time, but Deadline reports that according to their sources the most likely candidate is trilogy closer “Dune Messiah”.
However, they add that “hurdles still have to be cleared as they’re still working on script and locking cast, but it is the project Villenueve has been working on.”
Villeneuve has previously indicated he intends to make another, secret (and smaller) film before then – whether he can with this date set is not clear. He has been linked to several projects in development from “Cleopatra” to “Rendezvous with Rama” to “Nuclear War: A Scenario”.
