Recently, Sony held its State of Play showcase teasing upcoming games for the PlayStation platform. Notably missing was much in the way of major first-party fare aside from the overwhelmingly glowing reaction to the “Astro Bot” trailer.
In the hours beforehand though, one of the game directors behind one of the latter-era PS4’s first-party titles made a pretty damning statement on Twitter.
Jeff Ross, who worked as the game director on “Days Gone” at developer Bend Studio, was asked about a potential sequel making an appearance at a PlayStation showcase.
Ross says Sony executives, such as new CEO Hermen Hulst, were “never fans” which is why a follow-up title was never developed. He explains:
“A lot of people still ask me if there will ever be a Days Gone sequel, so I submit this poster as evidence it will never happen. Sony higher ups like Hermen were never fans, so you won’t hear about it at the PlayStation State of Play today or ever.”
The poster submitted was a piece of art, later revealed to be fan made, that included plenty of PlayStation mascots but no sign of any characters from his game.
Responding to those asking about his tweet, Ross says about Herman: “I think his bias was purely portfolio-based. Meaning they already had a zombie game, so why would they need the lesser-performing title.”
The game launched in 2019 and follows former outlaw-turned-drifter Deacon St. John in the wake of a pandemic that turned a part of humanity into vicious zombie-like creatures.
Reviews were average at release with just a 71/100 on Metacritic, and complaints of various bugs with the game. As time has passed though, reception from audiences seem to be much warmer than the critics with the game having a decent fanbase these days.
The title still managed to sell 7.3 million units in its first three years – more than all of Bend Studio’s previous games combined.
