Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has begun early development of an animated feature based on Animal Planet’s classic hit series “Meerkat Manor”.
Running from 2005 to 2008, the British television documentary series centered on the exploits of a family of meerkats known as ‘The Whiskers’ living in the Kalahari Desert.
It combined traditional animal documentary style footage along with narration and followed this family of creatures as part of a long-term field study into the cooperative nature of meerkats.
Bill Nighy dubbed the original series in the UK whilst Sean Astin and Stockard Channing did the U.S. broadcast.
The show was a worldwide hit, garnering Emmy nominations and became the network’s most watched show.
Warners is planning a “Lion King” remake-esque photoreal animation style movie but with the “spirit” of George Miller’s 2006 animated “Happy Feet”.
The film will be produced by Seth Green and Tracy Falco via their The Green Room production banner. Original series producers Caroline Hawkins and Clare Birks will executive produce.
