Paramount has confirmed that the “Star Trek” ‘origin’ film teased back in January is going ahead, and sooner than you think.
Three months ago came word that veteran British TV director Toby Haynes (“Andor,” “Black Mirror”) had been se tto direct a new theatrical release film in the series.
That film, which has Seth Grahame-Smith as writer and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot producing, is dubbed an ‘origin story’ set several decades before the events of the 2009 film reboot.
Today, Paramount confirmed at CinemaConin Las Vegas that the project is real and aims to shoot later this year for a 2025 release with the title officially included in the studio’s published slate of upcoming releases.
The Abrams films unfold in the late 2250s/early 2260s which would suggest this will unfold in the late 22nd/early 23rd century – a period of history in the Trek universe never really tackled before.
As a result, it’s not clear what characters or form this will take but it is separate from a potential fourth film in the Kelvin timeline. It will also mark the first “Star Trek” theatrical release since “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016.
