Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap producing label has hopped onboard the film adaptation of the board game “Monopoly” at Hasbro Entertainment and Lionsgate.
Multiple attempts to adapt the game into film have taken place across nearly two decades with no-one able to crack it. Filmmakers Ridley Scott and Tim Story were both linked at points in the past.
Lionsgate completed its purchase of Hasbro’s film and TV arm eOne in December which included the rights to “Monopoly”. LuckyChap meanwhile is coming off the success of adapting the Barbie toy for the big screen.
Robbie and her producing partners Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara will now tackle the project with Lionsgate film boss Adam Fogelson saying in a statement the team: “join Monopoly with a clear point of view”.
The game itself has been played by more than a billion people in 114 countries and has been translated into forty-seven different languages.
Originating in 1935, it challenges players to acquire properties and build houses and hotels – all while avoiding bankruptcy and jail.
