Amazon MGM Studios has announced that their recently released “Road House” remake has been a massive success for the streamer.
Amazon says the film had its biggest global movie launch ever with 50 million viewers tuning in to watch the film since it debuted on March 21st.
It marks the first time Amazon has announced a viewership number for a film launch, and it’s not clear how that number was reached – be it the Netflix/Disney approach of runtime of the film divided by total number of viewers, or simply those who tuned in for more than a minute.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, says in a statement:
“The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film’s cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal… It’s great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences.”
Gyllenhaal stars in the film as ex-UFC fighter Dalton who is hired to be the bouncer of a bar in the Florida Keys. The film famously made headlines over disagreements regarding its release strategy.
