Following the release of Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Love and Thunder,” it was confirmed that several actors had filmed scenes for the project that were later cut.
The film’s director, Taika Waititi, confirmed that some roles that were significant early in the film’s development had been either sidelined or cut entirely.
One of those completely cut roles was a character to be played by “Game of Thrones” alum Lena Headey, whom Waititi approached directly for the part.
Now, in a new interview with ScreenRant, Headey finally revealed details of that cut role and revealed that “The Lincoln Lawyer” actor Angus Sampson and Oscar winner and “Only Murders in the Building” star Da’Vine Joy Randolph also appeared in the film and were cut.
“I wasn’t in it, but I worked on it. There were three of us. We were [a] coven of witches. I think it was Taika’s invention, and they were kind of Thor’s guide in the underworld, but they were very, very funny and kind of insane.
I think there was this whole story of like, ‘They got fired,’ when actually it was just like, ‘What are they doing here?’ But I think the intention was to find this land for them to have their own adventures. It was myself, Angus Sampson, and Da’Vine Joy, so it was quite a trio of madness… So yeah, bummer that we didn’t make the cut”
Essentially, it sounds like Waititi was doing a spin on the Stygian witches from the Greek myth of Perseus for the MCU – fitting for a film which borrows other Greek Myth elements like Russell Crowe’s Zeus and Brett Goldstein’s Hercules.
The sequence was never released as a deleted scene, with Waititi previously indicating there are no plans to release such scenes. “Thor: Love and Thunder” ultimately grossed $760.9 million at the worldwide box office despite weak reviews.
