“Beef” creator Lee Sung Jin and “The Bear” writer/co-showrunner Joanna Calo are both reportedly writing – or rather re-writing – Marvel Studios’ upcoming “X-Men” film.

At last report, Michael Lesslie (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t”) was penning the script for the film. Lesslie himself was rewriting an earlier script by Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean.

“Thunderbolts” director Jake Schreier is directing the film and let slip the news during an interview with Collider while out promoting the second season of “Beef” on Netflix, which he directed.

Offering an update on where things stand on the X-Men project, he says:

“We’re still developing. You know, one of the exciting things that’s tying into Beef is that Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on this season. Obviously, I mean, Beef is Sonny’s show, and Joanna worked on the season as well, and we worked together on Season 1 of Beef and on Thunderbolts*. They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again.

When you go back and read X-Men [comics], there’s ideology but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality. Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that’s what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be.”

No cast has been announced yet, but rumours have all suggested Marvel is going young with the actors being sought in their teens and twenties. Sadie Sink’s role in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is believed to be that of X-Men staple character Jean Grey.

The new “X-Men” film is expected to arrive in cinemas in 2028.
