Consumer group Movimento Consumatori has announced that an Italian court has upheld its lawsuit against Netflix Italia reports Reuters.
The lawsuit was over what’s deemed unfair clauses that allowed subscription price increases from 2017 to January 2024. The ruling indicates the clauses were unfair and breached the national Consumer Code because “they allowed changes to be made without stating a valid reason in the contract.”
The ruling says each subscriber would be entitled to a reduction in the current subscription price, reimbursement of sums unduly paid and, where applicable, compensation.
The ruling also must be published on Netflix Italia’s website and in the leading national newspapers to inform consumers.
Netflix reportedly had 5.4 million Italian subscribers in 2025 with those who’ve been on the Premium Plan subscription since 2017 entitled to the biggest refund – as much as 500 euros each.
Netflix said in a statement that it would appeal against the court’s decision: “We take consumer rights very seriously and believe our terms have always complied with Italian laws and practice.”
