If you were to ask any collection of online movie fans who should be the next James Bond, it is a pretty safe bet that Henry Cavill would be the overwhelming favorite. He has been in many fans’ minds for the role for years.
Unfortunately, it does look as if his time has passed. He is now 42, and could be pushing on 45 by the time his first Bond movie was released. It is strongly rumored that the new producers over at Amazon are looking for an actor in their very late 20s or early 30s who can lock in for a long run in the role.
This is unfortunate timing for Cavill. Two decades ago, he was director Martin Campbell’s choice for the role in Casino Royale before ultimately being judged as too young at the time, at just 22 years old. The part went to 37-year-old Daniel Craig, who went on to be the longest-serving and most critically acclaimed Bond in history.
In a recent interview with Heat Magazine, Cavill seemed like he had come to terms with missing out on the coveted role simply due to bad timing, and would like to be included in the world of 007 in another way:
“I didn’t turn the role down. It just wasn’t the right time. What actor wouldn’t love to be Bond? But at 42, I’d probably be considered a bit old to start now. I would love to be a Bond villain, though. If it was the right character, I think that would be fascinating to explore.”
Fascinating proposition, but at least at the beginning of a new Bond’s career, it could also be too risky to have the fans’ favorite actor facing off against him as the villain.
No new 007 actor will likely be announced before director Denis Villeneuve has finished up on Dune: Part Three, so it could even be as late as 2027, putting any new movie into 2028 at the absolute earliest.
