You know how some movies slip under the radar? Well, this was Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice. It popped out of nowhere in my feed, and I thought I would give it a go.

The cast was good: Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Eiza Gonzalez, Keith David, Jimmy Tatro, Arturo Casto, Lewis Tan, and Ben Schwartz. I’ve left off a couple of cast members, because I don’t want to spoil part of the story.

The Story

I knew nothing of the story going in, so I was pleasantly surprised by it all.

Two friends navigate the dangerous world of organized crime, testing their loyalty and survival skills as they get deeper into the criminal underworld.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Nick (Vaughn) knows that Quick Draw Mike (Marsden) is sleeping with his wife, Alice (Gonzalez). Nick and Mike are gangsters and have to deal with ‘situations’, usually with guns.

Mike thinks Nick knows about his affair and thinks he’s going to get ‘whacked off’, is that the expression? Anyway, Nick tells Mike they have to deal with a ‘situation’, and Mike has to knock someone out and tie them up.

When they get to the location, Mike enters a house, ready to take someone out. It turns out to be Nick, well, another Nick. From there on in, things get a little weird, and I won’t spoil them.

The Cast

Personally, I’m a big fan of Vaughn. I first saw him in Swingers and loved his character. He plays comedy well, and I love his fast talking. Then he goes and does something like Brawl in Cell Block 99, and shows another side to him.

In Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, he’s a mixture of the two. His comic timing is great, but then he also does action well. Some of the scenes are fun, although pretty brutal.

Marsden and Gonzalez are both good. Gonzalez is very easy on the eye. It’s always great to see Keith David, in Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, he’s hilarious. He plays the head of a mobster family and is super nice in places, but then a violent monster in others. He’s fine about having a beer spilt on him, but the poor guy ends up in the hospital.

Double The Vaughn

You may have noticed, in the title, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, and in the header image. There are two Nicks, two Vaughns. I’m not going to spoil why, because it’s fun, and also, it doesn’t make sense, but it is entertaining.

As I said, I like Vaughn, and having two of him, playing off each other, is great to see. As I say, it’s one of those movies that you can’t overthink; why there are two Nicks is stupid, but you don’t mind, because you’re having fun with everyone and just happy to follow the story.

Overall

For a movie that came out of nowhere, I found Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice to be a pleasant surprise. It’s funny, the action was good, and the story was solid, as in you’re happy to follow it, but don’t overthink it. Bonus picture of Gonzalez for no reason.

I left some cast members out. In the story, Mike is thought to be a snitch. They bring in The Barron, a cannibal hitman, a guy who kills and eats his victims. The casting is perfect; sadly, the Barron wasn’t in the movie long.

This is a short review, as if I go on too long, I will spoil the story. If you go into this blind, you’re in for a couple of hours of fun. It’s not the greatest movie of all time, but I was thoroughly entertained.

I’m giving Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice 3.5 out of 5. It’s a good one for a few drinks. The only bad news is that Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is streaming on Disney+ outside the US.
