The Academy Awards are moving house. Starting with the 2029 ceremony, the Oscars will shift from the 3,400-seat Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland to the 7,100-seat Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in Downtown Los Angeles.
The shift will see the Oscars taking place at their new home for at least ten years, through 2039. It coincides with the telecast’s switch from broadcast on ABC to its new home on YouTube in 2029.
Coincidentally, it will also mark the 101st Oscars ceremony.
The shift falls under a deal with L.A. Live owner AEG, which plans “comprehensive enhancements to the theater” including upgrades to stage, sound, lighting, backstage facilities, and lobbies. Red carpet events will expand into the plaza.
The Dolby Theatre has hosted the Oscars since 2002, with the exception of the 2021 ceremony, which was held at Union Station as a concession to COVID.
Prior to that, the ceremony alternated between the 3,156-seat Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the 6,300-seat Shrine Auditorium since 1968.
