A spin-off of Lionsgate’s “John Wick” franchise, one revolving around Donnie Yen’s blind assassin Caine, has finally set a production start next month.

Deadline reports that Yen will both direct and reprise his role in the new film which was first announced back in May 2024 and follows the character introduced in the fourth “John Wick” who has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.

The character was last seen in a post-credits scene in Paris with his daughter having stopped the threats to his daughter’s life. At the same time, the former Osaka Continental concierge Akira (Rina Sawayama) is closing in on him.

Robert Askins was originally attached to write, but Mattson Tomlin (“The Batman: Part II”) has taken over and penned the script with Michael McGrale co-writing. Chad Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee will produce.

Yen says in a statement: “What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero. This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story.”

Yen has directed several films over the years including “Sakra,” “Legend of the Wolf,” “Ballistic Kiss” and “The Prosecutor”.
