Way back in December, the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaked online via a poorly shot cellphone capture from a computer screen. It was a very early cut, with portions of unfinished VFX.

This has seemingly been confirmed now as genuine, as a report from Spider-Man News (via Dark Horizons) says it caused a massive amount of activity to rework the trailer that left them working right up to the wire.

The leak spread across the web like wildfire

Someone claiming to be an editor who worked on the project says that the team had to make a whole new version to hit the release date for the trailer, and as a result, entered what the editor calls “runaway mode”. According to the report:

“Everyone voluntarily worked overtime, weekends were reduced by half, and everyone was constantly synchronising the progress.”

The same source says they were still putting final tweaks into shots the night before the trailer was released.

The trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home is the biggest launch trailer of all time, with views online smashing records. To the trained eye of many Outposters, it was noted how some of the VFX shots still clearly had some way to go before they were ready for the final movie.

Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in his 20s and living alone in NYC after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and his identity reveal being erased from the memories of the world by Dr Strange.

He is now street-level Spider-Man, dedicating himself to fighting local, rather than intergalactic, crime. Under high stress he starts to undergo some physical changes, just as a crimewave grips the city that forces him to face a grave threat (are there any other kind?)

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in cinemas on July 31st.
