With an Oscar for Best Actor in the bag, the reports say that Michael B. Jordan knows his worth. According to a new story over at The InSneider, Jordan’s agency advised him to slow down negotiations until after the Oscars for the role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in F1 director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Miami Vice reboot.
Now he has gotten the big prize for his turn in Sinners, the report says he is seeking a higher salary.
$18 million, to be precise. That is over double that of his co-star Austin Butler, who is, himself, a Golden Globe and BAFTA winner and an Oscar nominee.
Earlier in the week, the news broke that the producers want Tom Cruise for the villain role. Can the production afford this kind of salary with this cast circling?
Miami Vice drew upon 1980s culture, such as contemporary rock and pop music, fashion, and sports cars, such as the Ferrari Testarossa and Daytona. It generally prioritized music and stylized visuals over elaborate writing.
A grittier reboot movie was made in 2006 by original producer Michael Mann. It grossed $164.2 million worldwide on a reported $135–150 million budget. The film received polarizing reviews, with praise for Mann’s directing and visual style and criticism for the serious storyline, though in subsequent years, its reputation among critics and filmmakers has grown.
So the big question is – can this IP give the required return on investment for such high salaries?
Universal has scheduled Miami Vice for theatrical release on August 6th 2027.
