Two major upcoming titles have hit early box-office tracking with both set to make a splash in their debut.

First up, Box-Office Theory is forecasting that Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” is tracking for an opening weekend of around $52-65 million domestically.

In the musical biopic genre, that’s a bigger debut than the $26 million of “Rocketman,” the $31 million debut of “Elvis” and the $51 million debut of “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

The site advises the number is in no way a ceiling and could go higher. The film’s production budget is said to be around $155 million and is expected to do big business in international markets.

The site is also projecting a debut of at least $55 million for “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” a film serving a demographic that doesn’t get many titles in the marketplace: female audiences over the age of 35.

Combined with being close to Mother’s Day, the title has reportedly been doing robust pre-sales and driving social media engagement on par with the biggest titles of the year.

Its main competition will be “Mortal Kombat II” the following week on May 8th, though that is targeting an entirely different demographic.
