Back in 2014, we were already about to exit our second iteration of a big-screen Spider-Man. Whenever faced with the tiniest bit of cinematic headwinds, studio reaction was “Welp, we tried, might as well give up completely and reboot!”

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed, and Sony was facing the embarrassment of a North Korean e-mail hack showing their entire executive suite was a bunch of deeply fucktarded morons, they threw their hands in the air and started talking to Marvel.

Caught in the crossfire was a planned Sinister Six movie that was deply hinted at in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that was to be written and directed by Drew Goddard.

The Cabin in the Woods filmmaker, screenplay writer for the upcoming Project Hail Mary, was also set to be the showrunner on Daredevil for Netflix and Marvel.

In the space of a few months, he would exit that show and see Sinister Six cancelled. In an interview with Variety, he spoke about what happened:

“I had a big Spider-Man movie about the Sinister Six go down because of the Sony hack. My office was right on the lot, and I saw the FBI swarm in and the helicopters fly over the studio. I was sad about it, but there was literally nothing I could do to change the course of events. I suppose it was better than if they hadn’t liked the script.”

The hack revealed a lot of the proposed project, including the villains Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Vulture, Rhino, Mysterio, Sandman, Scorpion, Black Cat, Venom, and Electro not being fully settled and the studio being heavily involved.

The cancellation of anything else in the world of The Amazing Spider-Man was followed by the abject failure of all things SPUMC, like Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and Morbius. Venom did business, but was no creative triumph. This left the MCU Spider-Man as the only game in town.

There is better news there, as this week’s big release of the trailer has beaten, hands down, every trailer viewing record that exists in the internet age.

It was the biggest movie trailer launch in history, drawing 718.6 million views in 24 hours. That’s nearly double the 365 million views held by Deadpool and Wolverine. Spider-Man: Brand New Day also took the record for the biggest trailer launch of any kind, easily beating the 475 million views in 24 hours that Grand Theft Auto VI scored.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31st.
