Filmmaker Drew Goddard (“The Cabin in the Woods,” “Bad Times at the El Royale”) is currently out promoting “Project Hail Mary,” the sci-fi feature which he adapted the script for from the novel by Andy Weir.

Back in 2013, Goddard was being lined up to serve as showrunner on Netflix’s “Daredevil” series and was slated to both write and direct a “Sinister Six” movie. The latter film was a project the two “The Amazing Spider-Man” films starring Andrew Garfield had been laying the ground work for.

Then things fell apart. Goddard withdrew as showrunner on “Daredevil” after just a few months in the gig and just as casting got underway, meanwhile the failure of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” at the box-office led to Sony shifting their plans and making a deal with Marvel that led to a reboot of “Spider-Man”.

Thus, the “Sinister Six” film was scrapped. Goddard, though briefly in talks to helm “Spider-Man: Homecoming” before Jon Watts got the gig, essentially was no longer involved with Marvel projects and moved onto other fare.

Now, speaking with Variety this week, the topic of the film came up and he said the Sony studio hack in late 2014 played a part in what happened:

“I had a big Spider-Man movie about the Sinister Six go down because of the Sony hack. My office was right on the lot, and I saw the FBI swarm in and the helicopters fly over the studio. I was sad about it, but there was literally nothing I could do to change the course of events. I suppose it was better than if they hadn’t liked the script.”

The hack suggested that the character roster of villains that were considered included Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Vulture, Rhino, Mysterio, Sandman, Scorpion, Black Cat, Venom, and Electro.

Meanwhile Goddard also spoke about one of his more recent gigs – being hired to pen and direct the next film in “The Matrix” saga. Speaking about that, he says writing is still underway and can’t say whether Keanu Reeves or any of the original cast would return.

He was also asked why the fourth film, 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections,” failed to catch on with people. He says:

“I don’t know. It certainly resonated with me. When I watched the movie, I was deeply moved. It may be the most emotional of the of the four. I know it got caught up in the COVID times, and it was when Warner Bros. was putting everything on streaming.”

The box-office failure of “Kraven the Hunter,” “Madame Web” and “Morbius” has put Sony’s Spider-Man universe plans on hold for now beyond stuff already in the works including May’s “Spider-Noir” series, July’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” film, and next Summer’s “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” animated feature.
