An interesting report over at Dark Horizons this morning indicates that Amazon MGM Studios may have more riding on Project Hail Mary than we previously thought. Namely, their entire cinematic approach.

Project Hail Mary is open today, and it has strong reviews and decent box office projections, with Variety reporting that a $63-65 million opening is possible. This would make it the biggest Amazon MGM opening, beating the previous record holder, Creed III.

The issue could be the $200 million budget, meaning it has to clear a hurdle rate of $500 million at the box office to break even. Amazon says that due to Prime Video subscription boosts, it doesn’t quite shake out like that, as it is not a conventional cinema release, but it’s one that is familiar to analysts and observers.

The issue, according to the report, is that the rest of Amazon MGM’s cinematic efforts haven’t exactly lit the world on fire. Challengers, Air, The Accountant 2, and Red One are mentioned as movies that didn’t cover their budgets.

Crime 101 has fizzled, After the Hunt bombed, and Melania was too expensive to start with.

So the fear is that if Project Hail Mary and the upcoming Masters Of The Universe fail to find some legs at the box office, Amazon may follow Apple into a large-scale retreat from cinematic releases.

That said, Project Hail Mary and Masters Of The Universe are two of the movies most likely to motivate me to get off my couch and get to the theater this year.
