The first season of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” came to a close this past week on Paramount+ and while the long-term future of the franchise itself remains unclear, those currently involved in it want to keep going.

We do know that three more seasons of “Star Trek” television have already completed filming – the fourth and fifth/final season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and a second season of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”.

Where the franchise goes beyond that isn’t clear. For now, there are no further “Star Trek” TV series greenlit or in production – the first time Trek has taken a small screen break in more than a decade.

Speaking with TrekMovie however, “Strange New Worlds” co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers offered an update on one potential series being floated – “Star Trek: Year One”.

The proposed show, first teased last year, would see Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk during his first year as captain of the USS Enterprise. Myers say the project has been formally pitched and he and executive producer Akiva Goldsman are committed to doing it should it get the go ahead:

“We think it would be a great show. It feels like the natural next chapter for Star Trek and the story we have been telling, but the decision is out of our hands.

We’ve brought them a lot of material. We’ve done a lot of work and shared it with them. Now it’s in their hands. They’re looking it over and deciding what they want to do. There’s a lot of love for our show there, and of course a lot of love for Star Trek.”

The original 1960s “Star Trek” series started at least a year or two into Kirk’s five-year mission onboard the Enterprise – though the second pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before” is set during the earliest days of the mission.

Paramount’s new owners previously indicated that “Star Trek” is important to them but their comments suggested a rebooted film/TV universe could be the plan for the studio at some point to try and garner a wider audience.
