A new report over at DanielRPK is claiming that rising British actor Leo Woodall is in talks to play a younger version of Aragorn in the upcoming “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum”.

Two years ago came the news that the film was in the works, the first live-action Middle-Earth film since “The Hobbit” trilogy ended in 2014, with the likes of Andy Serkis, Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood reprising their roles while Serkis will direct.

The film reportedly takes place in the twenty years prior to ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ acting as a bridge between the two trilogies, and so having 67-year-old Viggo Mortensen playing a thirtysomething Aragorn would require some major (and costly) de-aging effects.

Mortensen was asked to return, but declined, resulting in a months-long casting process to find someone suitable to replace him. This report appears to suggest he’s been found.

The 29-year-old actor is on a very quick rise following his debut in the Tom Holland-led “Cherry” and the second season of HBO’s “The White Lotus”.

He really broke out last year, though, with major roles in “Nuremberg” and “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” as well as the lead role in series “Prime Target”. He currently appears as the object of Rachel Weisz’s affection in the just-released “Vladimir” on Netflix.

This follows reports during the past week via Knight Edge Media which indicated two key female characters are being cast for major roles in the film, one of them being a mother of either Smeagol or Aragorn’s characters. Another one is rumored to be a younger version of Liv Tyler’s Arwen.

Production on “The Hunt for Gollum” is reportedly targeting a May start in New Zealand.
