HBO unveiled the first trailer for its DC Studios series “Lanterns” yesterday, and it followed its promise of looking like “Green Lantern” if done with an HBO-style “True Detective”-style aesthetic.

In fact, so grounded was the trailer with only one obvious FX shot – Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan taking flight – that it led to something of a backlash from some fans who were expecting something with more cosmic imagery.

Even the rings, lantern and bodysuit drew complaints for not being ‘green enough’, and now HBO has responded with a sarcastic tweet on X saying: “What do you mean there’s no green?” before including a screen cap of a green fast food basket.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Chris Mundy (“True Detective: Night Country”) is showrunner and executive producer and writes the series with Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and comic book scribe Tom King (“Supergirl”).

Also starring are Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

“Lanterns” releases on HBO in August.
