For over a year now, HBO and DC Studios have been very clear that their new introduction of the Green Lanterns into the DCU would be a contained story, low-key and told in a more grounded fashion than previous attempts at the character. They have been clear on this.

So it was somewhat surprising to see the internet start to ask where Ryan Reynolds and his hammer hands were in the new trailer that dropped just yesterday.

The trailer for Lanterns delivered on their promise of a Green Lantern series done in the style of True Detective. There was one main show of Lantern powers when Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan took flight. This is where a lot of the internet criticism is centred, with most asking where the cosmic green energy is?

The rings, lantern, and bodysuit also drew complaints for not being green enough. To which HBO responded directly on Twitter/X with something of a joke:

This Lanterns series will follow new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan. As they are on what seems to be some kind of training trip, they find themselves drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Clearly, this will turn out to be something unexpected and likely linked to the wider DCU.

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is the showrunner and executive producer. Damon Lindelof wrote, but thankfully, he has back-up from noted comic book scribe Tom King.

Aaron Pierre is John Stewart, with Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones co-star.

Lanterns is released on HBO in August and will be on Sky TV in the UK
