Back in late 2023, news broke that Denzel Washington was attached to play the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal the Conqueror in a new Netflix film.
The project would reunite him with this “The Equalizer” and “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua, while the script is being penned by “Gladiator” and “Skyfall” scribe John Logan.
Since then, nothing much has been heard about the film until today. World of Reel reports that filming on the project is gearing up to get underway in June.
In addition, they report that three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (“JFK,” “Casino,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) will lens the film.
Hannibal Barca was a legendary tactician and leader, widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The story is expected to cover the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.
He’s most famous for invading Rome while riding a Northern African war elephant. He and the Carthaginians won key victories against the Romans – occupying the majority of southern Italy for fifteen years. He was eventually defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Zama.
Fuqua, Washington, Erik Olsen and Adam Goldworm will produce the film. Washington’s casting back in 2023 led to a bit of controversy in Hannibal’s home country of Tunisia where a complaint was raised in parliament.
Fuqua has his “Michael” film opening in cinemas next month.
