Sony Pictures has announced a March 27th theatrical re-release date for the late Rob Reiner’s beloved coming of age film “Stand by Me”.

The feature, an adaptation of Stephen King‘s 1982 novella “The Body,” was widely well-reviewed at the time and is often considered one of the best King adaptations alongside Reiner’s adaptation of “Misery”.

The synopsis reads: In a treehouse on the edge of Castle Rock, a small, woodsy town in Oregon, a budding 12-year-old writer named Gordie LaChance (Wil Wheaton) prepares to embark on an extraordinary journey.

When his best friend Vern (Jerry O’Connell) overhears his older brother discussing the discovery of a dead body in the woods, Gordie and his friends set out in hopes of becoming local heroes.

Joined by the tough but compassionate Chris (River Phoenix) and the reckless daredevil Teddy (Corey Feldman), the boys’ innocent adventure quickly becomes an odyssey of self-discovery in which they are tested in ways they never imagined, confronting fear, loss, and the realities of growing up.

Kiefer Sutherland, John Cusack, and Richard Dreyfuss co-starred in the film, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The re-release comes over a month after Reiner’s passing at the age of 78.

The coming-of-age classic that defined a generation.
